West vs West

There was a recent article in Marketing Magazine about a new effort to convince Calgarians to immigrate to Regina Saskatchewan. This struck a chord with me because I was born in Calgary and spent the early years of my life in Regina. Regina has always been “home” to me. My grandparents lived there, and as I moved from place to place we would always make time to return to Regina, our home plate. I now live in Toronto.

Transition from Wifi to Femtocells Begins

Posted on July 6, 2009 by Feist Posted in Technology Leave a comment
Europe is on the eve of its first Femtocell deployment. On July 1st, Vodafone began selling home networking routers that replace home Wifi and extend the coverage of Vodafone’s cell network at the same time. Right now the router costs are too high to justify for anyone but the most dedicated technofile, but the trend has started.

My Victor Animatograph Corporation Animatophone Model 40, Type 13

Posted on February 6, 2004 by Feist Posted in How-To 33 Comments

Introduction

First of all, I’m not trying to sell this projector. I consider it a family heirloom. The real reason I’m building this page is to share with everyone the details of this projector. There doesn’t seem to be much out there on the net about this thing (except for one or two pages containing references to undisclosed information that someone, of course, wanted to sell me). The industrial design that went into this unit is very interesting. I hope, through this site, to preserve the detail of its features and functionality, as well as information on how to use it and take care of it.

How to build the Apheared 47 Headphone Amplifier for Grado Headphones

Posted on July 15, 2003 by Feist Posted in How-To 10 Comments

Introduction

I should start off by saying that I’m a total newbie to the do-it-yourself electronics scene. I’m interested in this stuff but truth be told I build headphone amps because I want to use them. I doubt I’ll ever become one of those guys who has fifteen different amps of varying designs and application—but you never know what could happen. I’ve definitely been bitten with the obsession of building the best sounding amp possible for the application and money. I can see that it’s a slippery slope.

How to repair your broken 3COM HomeConnect 10/100 Dual Speed 5-Port Hub

Introduction

I encountered a problem with a bunch of 3COM HomeConnect 10/100 hubs that my employer bought to use around the office whenever we were short on LAN drops. They seemed like a good choice–small, fanless, 100mbps capable, beige… Then, one by one they started frying themselves.
